The music program is an essential part of our school at Manly State School. By giving importance to music and showcasing it both publicly and privately, it provides our school with a soul. It is also a vital part of the extra curricula program providing another avenue for children to focus their energies.
Being a part of the music program gives children a sense of belonging, cohesiveness and interaction that can teach them so many life skills - working as a team, building individual confidence and a sense of purpose and achievement as well as having great fun!
Junior Choir (Sing Stars)
Our Junior Choir is a vibrant group of young vocalists in the early years of primary school. This choir gives students an introduction to group singing, covering a range of songs designed to nurture their developing voices. They learn the basics of pitch, rhythm, and performance skills in a supportive and fun environment. The Junior Choir performs at school events and special assemblies, building confidence and teamwork among our young musicians.
Senior Choir
The Senior Choir welcomes students in the upper primary grades who are passionate about singing and ready to take on more challenging repertoire. Through a mix of contemporary and classic songs, the choir works on vocal technique, harmony, and stage presence. Our students get the opportunity to perform at larger events, showcasing their dedication and talent. Recently, the Senior Choir has taken on creative adaptations, such as a slow piano rendition of “Rhythm Is a Dancer,” adding depth to their performances.
Junior Fife
The Junior Fife Band introduces our youngest students to wind instruments through the fife, a small flute-like instrument. This band teaches them foundational skills, such as breathing, posture, and rhythm, in an approachable format. The junior fife band’s goal is to build their skills and play as a team to progress to the senior fife band in years 5 and 6.
Senior Fife Band
The Senior Fife Band builds on the basics taught in the Junior Fife Band, challenging students to expand their musical abilities and take on more complex pieces. Members of this band refine their skills in tone, rhythm, and group coordination, creating a cohesive sound. Their performances are a highlight at school events, as well as ANZAC day marches. They serve as role models for younger students.
Rock Band (Every Second Year)
Our Rock Bands are a dynamic ensemble open to students with an interest in contemporary music. This group alternates each year with our musical production and includes student musicians on electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and vocals. They learn popular rock and pop songs, developing skills in ensemble playing, stage presence, and improvisation. The Rock Band performs at special school events, bringing energy and excitement to our music program.
Full-Scale Musical Production (Every Second Year)
In alternate years with the Rock Band, the school produces a full-scale musical. This large production includes instrumentalists, vocalists, and stage crew, offering students a comprehensive experience in musical theater. Each show allows students to develop musical skills and gain experience in performance, acting, and collaboration. 2024’s production of The Lion King Jr. is a massive team effort involving digital backdrops, live instrumentation, and a talented cast and crew.
