Our goal is to provide the students of Manly State School with the best music education possible through a quality instrumental music program that emphasises its focus on ensemble performance, group tuition and enjoyment.
The opportunity to learn a musical instrument and be part of the instrumental music program is considered a privilege and is an extremely valuable tool in today’s life experiences.
Lessons and rehearsals
The Manly State School Instrumental music program is a program in which:
students learn band instruments
students receive instruction on a group basis
students have at least two contact periods per week, one in an instrumental lesson and at least one in an ensemble rehearsal.
These lessons are organised on a rotational basis to assist the children in not missing out on the same class lessons each week. The ensemble experience at Manly State School (for 2019) will be provided through the following ensembles:
Concert band (year 4).
Wind ensemble (year 5).
Symphonic band (year 6).
Rehearsals are before school and are compulsory for those in the program.
Recruitment
Recruitment for the Instrumental program occurs at the end of year 3. Students are assessed according to:
desire to learn
commitment
musical ability
behaviour
work habits
parental support.
Instruments offered in year 4 include: flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion.
We are able to loan instruments in the first year of learning. The larger expensive instruments (French horn, euphonium, tuba, bass clarinet, tenor saxophone) are on loan for the duration of the student’s learning. These expensive instruments are lent for the duration of the child’s primary education. In all other cases children are expected to purchase or hire their own instrument after one year.
Practice
Students in this program are encouraged to practice 5 x 20 minutes every week. This is vital to a successful experience in learning a given instrument. Practice is monitored by teachers with a practice record which we ask parents to monitor and sign. As students are taught in a group of approximately 5 it is important that they work together as a team and are up-to-date with the practise set by the teacher.
Attendance
It is compulsory for each student to attend timetabled lessons, instrumental group rehearsals and all performances. Students who are absent must present a note from their parents or email us on music@manlyss.eq.edu.au as soon as possible after that time. If a student continues to be absent without explanation, parents will be contacted and that student may be withdrawn from the program.
